PIGMENTATION

Pigmentation refers to the colouring of the skin, which is determined by the amount of melanin produced by skin cells. Hyperpigmentation occurs when excess melanin is produced, leading to dark spots or uneven skin tone. Common forms of pigmentation include age spots, sun spots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Pigmentation disorders are incredibly common, affecting around 30-50% of the adult population worldwide. Age spots appear in about 90% of individuals over the age of 50, while melasma affects around 5-10% of the population, particularly women, especially those aged 20-40.

Pigmentation can be caused by several factors, including:

  • Sun Exposure: UV rays trigger melanocytes to produce more melanin, leading to sunspots, freckles, and uneven pigmentation.
  • Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, such as those during pregnancy or the use of birth control, can cause melasma, a form of pigmentation that typically appears on the face.
  • Skin Inflammation: After a skin injury, inflammation, or acne, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can develop, leaving dark spots in its wake.
  • Ageing: As we age, the skin can develop age spots or liver spots, which are caused by years of accumulated sun exposure.
  • Genetics: Some individuals are genetically predisposed to developing pigmentation disorders, including freckles or more visible sun spots.
