MELASMA
What is Melasma?
Melasma is a common skin condition characterised by dark, discoloured patches, typically on the face. These patches often appear on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and nose. Melasma is caused by an overproduction of melanin, leading to uneven skin tone and pigmentation.
How Common Is Melasma?
Melasma is very common, affecting 5-10% of the population, predominantly women, particularly those between the ages of 20 and 40. Approximately 90% of those affected are women, with hormonal changes being a key trigger, especially during pregnancy (also known as the “mask of pregnancy”).
What Causes Melasma?
Melasma is primarily caused by:
- Sun Exposure: Ultraviolet (UV) rays can stimulate melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin, causing pigmentation to darken.
- Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy, the use of oral contraceptives, or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can trigger melasma, especially in women.
- Genetics: Melasma tends to run in families, with a genetic predisposition making certain individuals more susceptible.
- Inflammation or Injury to the Skin: Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can occur following an injury, irritation, or treatments like chemical peels.
How SKIN x LULU can help?
At Skin x Lulu, we offer advanced treatments designed to help improve the appearance of uneven skin tone and pigmentation. Our solutions aim to enhance skin clarity and radiance, promoting a more balanced complexion.
What Treatments Do We Offer?
• Chemical Peels: Our customised chemical peels exfoliate the skin and promote cell turnover, helping to refine skin texture and support a more even skin tone over time.
• Dermalogica Melanopro: This treatment is designed to address pigmentation concerns by supporting the skin’s natural balance, leaving your complexion clearer and more even-toned.
• Laser Skin Rejuvenation: Non-invasive laser treatments target skin pigmentation and help promote a smoother, more even complexion.
• Microneedling: Using fine needles, microneedling helps to stimulate collagen production and improve the appearance of skin texture.
• Cosmeceutical Skincare: We offer targeted skincare solutions from iS Clinical and Universkin, designed to enhance skin clarity, protect from further damage, and support a balanced skin tone.
• PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma): Using your own blood’s growth factors, PRP supports skin regeneration and promotes a smoother, more even skin appearance.
• Collagen Stimulators: These injectables help stimulate your skin’s natural collagen production, improving skin texture and supporting a more youthful appearance.
• Airyday SPF: A broad-spectrum sunscreen designed to protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, helping to prevent further pigmentation and maintain results post-treatment. Daily sun protection is essential for preserving your skin’s health. (Always read the label and follow directions for use. Prolonged sun exposure should be avoided.)
These treatments, combined with proper sun protection, can significantly enhance skin clarity and support a balanced, radiant complexion.
